About the Temporary Contract and Project

SN4A is seeking a communications consultant to coordinate coalition communications, contribute to strategy and narrative, assist with media outreach and social media planning and content development. 

Responsibilities of Communications Consultant:

  • Convene and coordinate member organizations

  • Liaison with the coordinating committee about communications plans

  • Lead on social media strategy and content development

  • Assist with earned media

Timeline and Hours

This role may be filled by an individual, a group of individuals, or a company. It is estimated to require an average availability of 5-10 hours per week with the understanding that at key campaign moments more hours will be required and fewer hours will be required at non peak times. Some night and weekend activities may be required based on the campaign calendar including a retreat October 7 and 8. 

Major Responsibilities

Ideal candidates will have exceptional abilities in at least two of the following areas.

Digital and Video Production and Management

  • Manages content related to Safety Net for All

  • Creates and executes an agreed upon social media plan

  • Prioritizes media channel growth strategies and works with the data team to track progress toward goals

  • Supports and guides coalition communications committee members in social content creation

  • Provides coaching and technical assistance to organizers and community members, helping them use technology and online outreach 

  • Provides regular feedback, analytics and analysis on social media to the coordinating committee of SN4A

Coalition support and capacity building

  • Facilitates regular meetings with the members of the communications committee for SN4A including maintaining the calendar invite, agenda and notes; following up with members about communications assignments

  • One on one check ins with committee members to ensure full participation and support

  • As needed, liaisons with the coordinating committee about the communications strategy and progress

Communications, Strategy, Media Relations 

  • In coordination with communications committee members and the coordinating committee, revises and edits overall campaign, message and narrative

  • Contributes to the written communications plan

  • Coordinates and executes media strategy when needed

  • Under the direction of the campaign director and coordinating committee interacts with journalists

    • Note, we are not seeking a campaign spokesperson.

Prioritized Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience managing Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and/or Facebook channels with medium-to-large followings, developing timely and relevant content, adapted for each platform or related areas

  • Passion for and experience in working with people of color, low-income folks, BIPOC communities and immigrants

  • Experience in grassroots organizing, advocacy, and/or electoral engagement techniques and how digital strategy can help advance off-line organizing

  • Working knowledge of video and audio equipment

  • Excellent writing skills, with ability to write for different audiences and mediums

  • Ability to be strategic, understand organizational goals, be aware of opportunities and challenges, and take initiative to achieve goals; works well independently

  • Strong time management, organizational, and work planning skills; ability to adjust work activity as needed and manage multiple projects according to timelines

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment; independent, proactive and able to work under the pressure of tight deadlines and changing priorities; comfortable with on-the-ground learning

  • Spanish-language fluency

  • Resident of California strongly preferred
