Undocumented immigrants are vital to our state! California is set to be the world’s fourth-largest economy in large part because of immigrant labor. Undocumented immigrants are a critical part of our workforce, with 78% of them working in what the government calls “essential jobs”. They grow our food, build our homes, care for our loved ones, and rebuild communities after disasters hit.

Undocumented immigrants also contribute to the state by paying upwards of $3.7 billion in state and local taxes a year. And, employers contribute over $300 million into the Unemployment Insurance system every year on their behalf.

Still, when faced with unemployment due to disasters or economic downturns, undocumented workers are excluded from life-saving safety net programs like unemployment benefits. This is unacceptable!
